As we age, our sex lives can begin to decline for multiple reasons. What is VRS, Vaginal Atrophy, and Urinary Incontinence?

Vaginal relaxation syndrome (or VRS) and vaginal atrophy are two very common problems women face. Both can be caused by illnesses that interfere with normal female hormonal balances, or as the result of natural aging, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause.

  • VRS is also described as “laxity of the vaginal wall,” which causes a lack of friction during intercourse, and can result in less sexual satisfaction for both partners

The Lotus Gynolaser

Another treatment we offer at Acqua Blu Medical Spa is the Lotus Gynolaser. The Lotus Gynolaser represents a new generation of non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation in Pittsburgh for vaginal laxity and atrophy. It uses CO2 laser technology, proven to be one of the most powerful and efficient laser technologies available. The Lotus Gynolaser stimulates the mucous-making tissues of the vagina and promotes neocollagenesis: an enriching of the mucous membrane with new, more tense, and more elastic collagen. The Lotus Gynolaser also helps restore the natural pH of the vaginal mucosa, resulting in greater flexibility, strength and moisture content, and a tighter, better-lubricated vaginal wall.

Because it restores collagen, the Lotus Gynolaser is also an effective treatment for stress urinary incontinence. Women who suffer from stress urinary incontinence have significantly less collagen in their cells. Collagen maintains the strength and elasticity of cell and tissue structure, and its loss is believed to reduce the ability of the pelvic floor muscles to support the urinary tract. What Kind of Laser is the Lotus Gynolaser?

The Lotus Gynolaser is a patented fractional CO2 laser specifically designed for treatment for vaginal atrophy. It delivers thermal effect to the mucosa, helping to regenerate the underlying connective tissue. Treatment takes as little as five minutes, and downtime is minimal. The Lotus Gynolaser is one of the best choices for those looking for non-surgical treatment for sexual health needs, as it doesn’t require any anesthesia, and does not involve incisions or stitching. A disposable i-Slide tube fits over the sterilized laser cylinder to assure comfort and hygiene.

How Does the Gynolaser Work?

The Lotus Gynolaser uses a non-surgical fractional C02 laser system, very similar to the laser treatments that have long been available for facial rejuvenation. The laser works by optically splitting a laser beam into a series of very small dots. These dots are aimed at the inside wall of the vagina or vaginal canal. The laser pulses for less than a tenth of a second, during which the intensity of the laser is carefully varied by a computer to match the characteristics of the existing vaginal wall.

At the point of contact, the laser removes a tiny area of tissue, creating a pinhole around the same size as the diameter of a human hair. The pinhole stimulates the body to repair itself, signaling cells to create new, healthy tissue at the site of the dot and the flesh immediately surrounding it.

The laser also works to heat the area between dots, stimulating the activity of specialized cells that create elastin and collagen: the building blocks of healthy tissue. This process involves the same concepts as many facial rejuvenation procedures in terms of skin healing and collagen stimulation.


What are the Benefits of the Lotus Gynolaser?

The Lotus Gynolaser treatment causes a functional restoration of the vaginal mucosa, which helps to greatly reduce or even eliminate the symptoms of vaginal atrophy: a widespread problem among pre and postmenopausal women, as well as women who have lost estrogen due to other conditions such as chemotherapy.

Thanks to its action on factors leading to vaginal dryness, fragility, and loss of mucosal elasticity, the Lotus Gynolaser can eliminate troublesome itching, irritation, and pain, which become particularly acute during intercourse.

The Lotus Gynolaser stimulates the collagen contained in the vaginal walls, and helps the lining grow and thicken, resulting in vaginal rehydration and functional tissue restoration, returning your self-confidence and sexual sensation.

What Should I Expect from the Lotus Gynolaser Treatment?

At the start of your treatment(s), a swab will be inserted into your vagina to dry out the inside as much as possible prior to the insertion of the laser. This can be uncomfortable, but it’s over quickly. No anesthesia is required. Most patients describe the actual laser firing as a slight tingling sensation. Although the fractional CO2 laser treatment is performed inside the vagina, there is no pain associated with the treatment. The only discomfort patients typically experience is during the initial treatment when first inserting the laser hand piece into the vagina—and that discomfort is due to the patient’s atrophy symptoms. You can relax knowing that the discomfort you will face is less than that of a speculum insertion.

Preparation for Your Lotus Gynolaser Treatment

Prior to a vaginal rejuvenation treatment at Acqua Blu Medical Spa, all patients must meet with us for a private consultation to discuss Lotus Gynolaser treatment. You will also need to have had a PAP smear and examination proving you have no abnormalities within the last year.

What is Recovery from the Lotus Gynolaser Like?

Most women report slight localized discomfort directly following the laser treatment, and during the first few days after the session. Many patients resume their normal routine after as little as one to three days. During the healing period, you should avoid lifting weights, taking a hot bath, or doing physical exercise. Dr. Heil will give you specific indications for a speedy recovery. Treated patients can resume sexual activity three to four days after treatment in order to allow the vaginal canal surface to heal properly.

Who is a Candidate for Lotus Gynolaser Treatment?

The Lotus Gynolaser is best suited for those struggling with vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, and painful sexual intercourse related to peri and postmenopausal changes from decreased estrogen levels. Women undergoing hormonal treatment for breast cancer are great candidates as well. The Lotus Gynolaser is ideal for those looking for a less invasive procedure compared to traditional surgical or pharmaceutical treatments.

Are There Any Risks?

The risks with the Lotus Gynolaser are minimal. The treatment is performed in-office, with no anesthesia. Mild discomfort, slight redness, swelling, or itching can be temporary side effects, but they should disappear within one or two days.

How Much Does a Lotus Gynolaser Treatment Cost?

Lotus Gynolaser treatments are not covered by either Medicare or health insurance. Care Credit financing is available. Pricing will depend on the number of sessions recommended in your treatment plan; your treatment plan will cater to your clinical needs and be presented to you during the consultation.

March 19th Update:

It has always been our mission to take the very best and safest care of our patients and staff, and in these uncertain times, this responsibility extends also to our Western PA community at large. Therefore, we are monitoring the situation on a daily basis with safety as our top priority. Currently, all patients and employees are being screened before entry to our facilities; this involves both measuring each person’s temperature and a COVID-19 screening survey based on PA DOH and UPMC standards. All patients with a temp over 99.5°F will be asked to reschedule. We have gone down to a skeleton staff to minimize the office population and ensure that less than 10 people will be in any facility region at the same time. We will be minimizing the use of waiting rooms by directly rooming patients after check-in when possible and, at times, by asking some patients to safely wait in their cars until their exam or treatment room is ready.

Hand sanitizers are available throughout our offices as well as sinks with soap and water. We continue to disinfect all frequently-touched surfaces between patients, including counters, furniture, pens, iPads, door handles, restroom fixtures, exam tables and chairs, wiping them down with hospital-grade sanitizers after each patient encounter. Our professional evening cleaning service is taking extra precautions in cleaning using their EnviroShield Endure System and adhering strictly to guidelines issued by the CDC & OSHA. Our facility is always maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness and sterility; however, we have ramped up our daily practice of decontamination and hygiene protocols to an even higher standard. Please limit chaperones to one additional person, and refrain from bringing in children and the elderly.

If you recently have had surgery and need to be seen for a follow-up visit, be assured that we will see you personally to ensure a full and safe recovery. At these appointments, you will be seen by only essential staff that have remained healthy, without signs of any illness or history of viral exposure. As a standard precaution, personal protection equipment will be worn as appropriate when examining you in accordance with any standing CDC recommendations. For now, at Premier Plastic Surgery we will be doing a limited number of consultations and treatments at our Wexford and Upper St Clair offices. March 18th Update:

For the safety of our patients and staff, Premier Plastic Surgery is temporarily limiting visitors and restricting patient care for those potentially infected with COVID-19 virus. All patients and visitors will be actively screened prior to entry. For patients recovering from surgery, we ask that you limit accompanying visitors to 1 per patient. Visitors will be asked to remain in their vehicle for the duration of the visit. Visitors will be permitted in the exam or waiting room only in special situations, when a visitor is essential for the well-being and care of the patient. No visitors who are ill, sick, frail, elderly or at-risk (i.e. immune compromised or serious chronic illness) will be permitted access. No children less than 18 years of age will be permitted. Please do not bring children to your visit. Any approved visitors will be screened at the facility entrance by a staff member and must comply with a temperature screening.

From the time we opened our practice in 2001, our patients and employees have always been central to our purpose and our top priority.

Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected by the coronavirus. In the face of this unprecedented pandemic, we want to assure you we are committed to the health and safety of our patients and employees.

As part of our occupational health and safety regulations, washing our hands between each patient, wearing gloves, sanitizing our instruments and tools, disinfecting our treatment rooms, operating rooms, and checkin and checkout desks are part of our regular daily practice and occurs frequently throughout the day - regardless of season or sickness. Additionally, our practice undergoes weekly deep cleaning. We do this to ensure that our patients can trust Premier Plastic Surgery & Acqua Blu not only for their treatment but also for the practice environment. 

We're closely following the guidelines of The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The World Health Organization (WHO) and The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and doing everything we can to keep our communities safe. We have provided hospital-grade antibacterial hand gel sanitizers in our office and are requiring each staff member and patient to use it upon their arrival. We have added more frequent disinfecting of high touch areas to our already rigorous sanitation standards. This will include the front door, the point of sale computer and surface areas, patient seating areas, treatment rooms, and bathrooms.

We are requesting that both patients and our staff take steps to reduce the transmission of communicable diseases by following these important guidelines:

  1. Stay home when you are sick and for at least 24 hours after you are free of fever (100 degrees F or 37.8 degrees C), or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medication. 
  2. Wash your hands frequently with warm, soapy water for a minimum of 20 seconds.
  3. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
  4. Cover your mouth with tissue when you sneeze and discard the tissue into the trash.
  5. Avoid people who are sick with respiratory symptoms.
  6. Clean and disinfect household objects and surfaces in your home.
